Feedback Requested on Phase One of the OpenJPEG Improvement Project

The first phase of work to improve OpenJPEG, an open source JPEG2000 (JP2) codec, has drawn to a close, resulting in the latest release of OpenJPEG, version 2.3.0. [more]

Tuition Fellowships Available for IIIF Workshop at DHSI 2018

The International Image Interoperability Framework (IIIF) Consortium is partnering with the Digital Humanities Summer Institute (DHSI) in Victoria, B.C. to offer five tuition fellowships for the Introduction to IIIF: Sharing, Consuming, and Annotating the World’s Images workshop, to be held June 4-8 at DHSI 2018. IIIF in Japan

A IIIF event in Tokyo, Japan at the National Institute of Informatics (NII) drew over 120 people from across the region on July 27, 2017, to learn about the basics of IIIF, examples of successful cases of IIIF adoption, available software, challenges, and expectations, and discuss potential for increased IIIF adoption in Japan. IIIF Discovery with Pontiiif

Interoperable image resources are only useful if they can be discovered. While the IIIF Content Search API “search within” for IIIF annotations is well defined and individual institutions have search technologies for their content, there has been no way to search for IIIF-enabled content across institutions.

Full IIIF Support for Collaborative Digital Editions in FromThePage

Thanks to a commissioned implementation grant, Brumfield Labs has implemented full client-side and server-side support for IIIF in the collaborative digital edition tool FromThePage. IIIF support allows editors to focus on textual issues instead of image format challenges, whether they run public-facing crowdsourced transcription projects or scholarly translation projects within small research groups.

The Digital Humanities (DH) Lab of the University of Basel is now the newest member of the IIIF Consortium, bringing membership to a total of 40 institutions worldwide.

Authentication API Version 1.0 Released

We are pleased to announce the release of the Authentication API v1.0 specification. This release follows a detailed review at The Hague working group meetings in October 2016, and final discussion on the 18 January 2017 community call.

University of Tokyo Joins the IIIF Consortium

The University of Tokyo has become the first institution in Japan to join the IIIF Consortium. An announcement is also available in Japanese.

North Carolina State University (NCSU) Joins the IIIF Consortium, Announces Exciting IIIF Implementation

The North Carolina State University (NCSU) Libraries officially joined the International Image Interoperability Framework (IIIF) Consortium as a founding member, in coordination with the release of their first implementation of the IIIF Image, Presentation, and Search APIs in a digitized collection of NCSU’s African American student newspaper, the Nubian Message. According to a news announcement from the NCSU Libraries, the digital collection contains over 200 issues of the paper, published between 1992 and 2005. The launch of the digital collection coincides with the NCSU Harambee (“let us come together” in Swahili) celebration, hosted by the NCSU African American Cultural Center each fall.

IIIF Image and Presentation API Version 2.0 Published

The International Image Interoperability Framework community (http://iiif.io/) is pleased to announce the release of the second major version of its specifications intended to provide a shared layer for dynamic interactions with images and the structure of the collections and objects of which they are part. These APIs are used in production systems to enable cross-institutional integration of content, via mix and match of best of class front end applications and servers.
