Overview

In order to foster a conference environment that better reflects the diversity of the community, the IIIF Consortium is pleased to announce two travel scholarships to attend the Annual Conference being held this year in the Netherlands.

Sponsorship

A named conference travel scholarship is a great sponsorship opportunity including logos on the IIIF website and conference slides, and named acknowledgements throughout plenary program – if interested, see our conference sponsorship page or email staff@iiif.io with any questions.

Scholarship details and expectations

  • The IIIF Consortium will provide up to €2000 to reimburse travel, lodging, and meals
  • The recipient is responsible for booking travel and logistics (although if upfront payment is an issue, we can help with some coordination), and for submitting expenses within 30 days of the conclusion of the conference
  • The recipient should be a first-time attendee of the conference
  • Recipients are expected to handle any paperwork requirements for travel to the Netherlands, but if letters of support or invitation are necessary the IIIF Consortium will provide those upon request
  • During the conference, recipients are expected only to be engaged participants/presenters, and there is no expectation of volunteer work
  • Scholarship recipients will present a lightning talk or poster during the main conference session
  • There will also be additional opportunities for contact and connection, including possible mentorship opportunities to be finalized closer to the date of the conference

Selection criteria

Preference will be given to the following, in no specific order:

  • Candidates from under-represented groups in the community (including but not limited to: women, people of color, LGBTQ+, ability/disability, non-binary gender identities, etc., as well as members of underrepresented and/or marginalized groups that don’t fit into the categories listed above)1
  • Attendees from under-represented countries and geographic regions, particularly the Global South
  • Attendees from new IIIF-implementing institutions and projects
  • Candidates who will present a poster or lightning talk (this does not need to follow the thematic requirements of the Call for Proposals - ideas in development, why IIIF would be useful or impactful to your research/institution, works in progress, and questions or aspirations around IIIF are encouraged)

Application requirements

In an email to admin@iiif.io with a subject line “2026 Travel Scholarship application,” please provide the following:

  • A brief narrative (500 words maximum) that addresses the following elements:
    • How your work would benefit from connection to the IIIF community, and what you would hope to achieve at the conference
    • How you would share what you learn at the conference with others
    • A description of financial need (e.g., no professional development funds at your institution, or no travel funding, etc.)
    • Please include a description of your proposed lightning talk or poster (this does not need to be a complete abstract)
  • A current resume or CV
  • A budget estimate for your stay in the Netherlands, using the provided template. Please budget for a stay in Leiden that allows attendance at the Showcase, Conference, and Workshops (June 1-4).

The application deadline is February 24, 2026. Applicants will be notified by March 20, 2026.

If you have any questions, please contact staff@iiif.io
