About
The IIIF Accessibility & Usability Community Group is committed to authoring, collecting, and sharing recommendations for creating accessible and user-friendly IIIF-compliant resources and interfaces. Our mission is to ensure the success and widespread adoption of IIIF tooling. The design of IIIF-compliant resources, tools, and interfaces must be people-focused and meet clearly defined needs. To support these efforts, we actively engage with experts in usability, accessibility, and human-computer interaction, as well as institutions, individuals, and end-users of IIIF tooling. To enhance access to content, this group will advocate for user-centered strategies that encompass all aspects of digitization and IIIF content consumption. Our goal is to improve the discovery, use, and reuse of IIIF resources across institutional and domain silos.
Scope
Accessibility: IIIF content should be perceivable, understandable, and navigable by all users.. Alternative representations, structural navigation, and accessibility metadata must be embedded in manifests, and IIIF tools should render this information in an accessible manner. Users should be able to focus on the material itself, not on overcoming barriers to access.
Usability: Digital tools and portals are needed to find and access IIIF content. The effectiveness, efficiency and satisfaction with the tools and web services are essential for users to work with the materials with ease and joy. End users should be able to focus on their research subjects rather than struggling with the interfaces to display the documents on their screens.
Goals
- Facilitate conversations, attract attention, create a destination for people to discuss accessibility and usability in the IIIF context
- Collect information from any source about these matters and bring it to the attention to the IIIF community (acting as liaison, disseminator to wider group)
- Explore feasibility of a task force regular usability testing
